Scuola del Cuoio

Scuola del Cuoio was founded after World War II through the collaborative efforts of the Franciscan friars of the Monastery of Santa Croce and the Gori and Casini families, Florentine leather artisans since the 1930’s. Their mission was to give orphans of the war a means to learn a practical trade with which to earn a living. Now Scuola del Cuoio is an international school whose students come from around the world to learn the time-honored techniques of leather handbag making.

Scuola del Cuoio’s long term programs provide students with a fully immersive experience into the traditional craft of leather working. The courses are designed with a focus on the technical aspects of bag making, particularly in the area of pattern making and construction process. The aim is to provide students with the skill-set to realize their ideas and creativity into an actual finalized product. Long term programs are offered in Apprentice Level and Artisan Level to participants who are over 18.

All courses teach how to make leather products from scratch, so there is no need for any experience or prior knowledge. Classes are held in both Italian and English and there’s a maximum number of 20 participants.

At the beginning of the long-term courses’ students make small items like passport holders, credit card holders, and eyeglass cases. After learning to use the stitching machine, the skiving machine and the splitting machine, they make three different pochette models and then different handbag models. Students make four models in the APPRENTICE course, then eight in the ARTISAN course. Of course, participants are welcome to use the techniques they learn to make items they prefer in terms of style, shape, and more, while being assisted by our two Masters.

Courses are held from Monday to Friday, 7 hours a day starting from 9.30am inside the old stable of the Monastery, a unique place to experience a century old tradition.
